Because Pencils Should Look Pretty Too!
Here is a super easy and fun project sure to make all your pencils and paint brushes happy. Not to mention help the environment by recycling! You can’t ask for much more than that!
First, gather up some clean empty cans. These are a standard size fruit/vegetable can. You can put a layer of gesso on but it’s not required.
Next gather up all those little scrap pieces of vintage wallpaper and scrapbook paper. You know…. The scraps you can’t bear to throw away, yet keep piling up because you’re not sure what to do with them? Yep….those. Now they have an important purpose….To brighten up a pencil’s day, and more importantly Save the World!
At this point you can either just tear the paper. Or, as in this case, I just cut them into squares and rectangles and glued down onto the can. Don’t worry about a pattern or being perfect. The beauty of this project is simplicity and randomness. Just have fun with it!
Keep gluing all your pieces until you have covered the can completely........
I painted the inside of the can with gesso as well as the edges. I then painted the edges of the wallpaper with a white paint to give it a “grout” effect……
Once you’re satisfied with the level of paint, let it dry while gathering some tulle and flowers. Of course, you can use ribbon or whatever else you have on hand. At the last minute, I decided to put a silver pipe cleaner around the rim……
Glue the tulle in place along with some flowers on top and you have a pencil holder fit for display!

What a great idea! I am definilty going to make a few of these. I was reorganizing my craft room earlier and looking for something to put my paint brushes in, PERFECT! Thank you so much

I love the chaos you create...because it's the kind of chaos I can sink my teeth into. The pipe cleaner around the top and the tulle just make it look so elegant!!

Simple but cute. Packaging is often an evil necessity. It's nice to find a way to reuse it.

Happy Pink Saturday! What a beautiful idea! One could also use little bits of pretty wrapping paper! I should do that for my pencils the poor things. I'm forever yelling at the "where the you-know-what is a pencil????" Seems there is never one within reach! Hee hee

What a lovely idea, and creative usage of scraps and what's laying around. Very Green too! Believe it or not, my mom had my 3 sis' and I do that back in the 70's and we used funky 70's wallpaper then...not sure what I did with mine!
Happy Pink...Lorena

How pretty! and *pink*! I love to see pretty things being made out of scraps and ordinary throw aways like cans! Now it's another story whether or not I can actually make it and have it look as pretty as yours!

I love the "grout" effect. I noticed that one some of your journals.... love it! So, I'm wondering, do you ever seal yours with modge podge? Or will it mess up the paint? xoxo, Joanna

These are so pretty! (like everything else you make) such pretty things here, I love it. Can you tell me what type of glue you used please? I tried something similar some time ago with PVA (white school glue) but when it dried all the bits fell off! :S
